The story behind the tee:

I wanted to create something that represents black women in a space where they are often left out, the bridal industry. Also, when it comes to media today, particularly in tv and film, black women being loved and loving back isn’t highly visible. I often think back to the late 80s-early 2000s, before all the unscripted television when there was an abundance of this visibility, showing positive imagery of black couples. This was important because the media, whether we like it or not, forms a lot of ideas and thoughts about what is and what could be. So seeing those images as a kid, I got to fantasize a little bit about what love could look like for me AND there was variety in that imagery. You had Gina and Martin who could laugh hard with one another. You had Synclaire and Ovy who were quirky and loved each other as they were and were so gentle with each other's hearts. You had Lisa who loved Prince Akeem beyond what he could offer her through his fortunes. You had Whitley and Dwayne who you saw evolve from young love to mature love, and when Fancy wed Jaime OMG that dress no lie 20 years later I still remember the details of that dress! I’m pretty sure it had some influence over my becoming a bridal gown designer. But seeing this representation on tv shined some light on what could be for me, again I want to note the variety and diversity within blackness at that time on tv was integral. I know seeing this not only altered my brain chemistry, but it did for other black women as well. It offered dimension beyond the marriages or relationships we saw at home. There have been very few bridal moments since then that shed a positive light on black love, Molly from Insecure being one of them. This black history month and beyond, I wanted to create a shirt paying homage to those characters that represented black love and created iconic bridal or wedding moments in black culture that live in our hearts and minds rent-free. Thank you to the creators that brought these stories to life. I hope to see many more!
